Eight of Africa’s most beloved musical superstars, from every corner of the continent, have teamed up to remind us of our shared responsibility to the world’s poor. MASSIVEGOOD first clicker Yvonne Chaka Chaka has joined the likes of Baba Maal (Senegal) and Eric Wainaina (Kenya) to record the “Eight Goals for Africa” song.

Eight stars, eight goals – why?

As Africa prepares for its first World Cup, the United Nations is launching an awareness campaign on the importance of reaching the eight “Millennium Development Goals,” a set of targets to tackle poverty, illness and hunger by 2015. At the 2000 United Nations Millennium Summit, leaders of 189 countries agreed to make these ambitious promises to alleviate the suffering of the world’s poor.

“Eight Goals for Africa” puts these promises in a musical context, in a song combining the full gamut of diverse styles from across sub-Saharan Africa. West African riffs, Soweto groove, rap and other pan-African elements are combined to form a positive musical message. Check out the video here:

"8 GOALS FOR AFRICA" is being disseminated free of charge locally and internationally, before, during and after the 2010 FIFA World Cup.The music video will be screened throughout the World Cup, across all the Fan Parks and Public Viewing areas. On the day of the finals, all 8 artists will come together to sing the song in a live performance at the Soccer City Fan Fest in Johannesburg.

The participating artists: Yvonne Chaka Chaka (South Africa), Angelique Kidjo (Benin), Oliver Mutukudzi (Zimbabwe), Mingas (Mozambique), Eric Wainaina (Kenya), HHP (South Africa), Baba Maal (Senegal), and the Soweto Gospel Choir (South Africa). Hugh Masekela (South Africa) and Jimmy Dludlu (South Africa) are 2 of the instrumentalists.
